Within the diverse world of design, I honed in on corners, spaces characterized by linear elements and sharp angles. My objective was to redefine how we perceive corners by expanding the angular aspect of the corner itself, emphasizing flexibility, and presenting the corner as an extended design element. Drawing inspiration from both lightboxes and partitions, Round 0 melds the functionality of illuminating space and dividing it into distinct yet interconnected areas. The journey from initial concept to the final Round 0 model was an evolution marked by refinement and innovation. I scaled down the design to ensure it harmonized with real spaces, opting for rounded shapes to counter angular corners. Fabrication involved framing the structure with steel, imparting a subtle color through torching, and meticulous sanding. This process yielded the distinctive appearance of Round 0.
Round 0's Illuminating Aesthetics:
Round 0 transcends mere functionality. The indirect lighting emanating from its rear broadens the corner's spectrum, creating the illusion of a more expansive space. Gaps in the front enable light to flow forward, transforming the play of light from a line into a surface. Additionally, the colors at the back enhance the visual impact of the emitted light, contributing to an overall captivating aesthetic.
Throughout my body of work, I have gravitated towards rounded imagery. This inclination stems from a fascination with the concept of "round." The fluidity and ease that curved forms offer resonate deeply with me, despite my inherently angular disposition. The desire to refine sharp angles into rounded shapes became the genesis of Round 0. In essence, "roundness" embodies my ultimate design goal and ideology.
Design Philosophy: Elegance, Comfort, and Stability
In my view, exceptional design should evoke joy and comfort in the viewer. These qualities align seamlessly with the concept of "round." The word itself conveys a sense of ease, while also implying stability—a perfect equilibrium. Round 0 serves as a testament to the direction of my work moving forward. Starting with Round 0, my aspiration is to craft designs that encapsulate ease and stability across a spectrum of shapes and materials.
